The article analyzes the problem of regional studies as an aspect of teaching Turkish to German learners. It is argued that the subject ‘Turkish Studies’ is highly complex because of the multicultural situation of Anatolia, both at present and in history. On the other hand, regional studies in the context of Turkish for German learners should also comprise information on the specific experience of Turkish immigrants in Germany and a discussion of wide-spread German stereotypes about people coming from Anatolia. Major problems are the shortage of teaching time as well as the social distance between German learners and Turkish immigrants.
